Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole

· In: Casserole, Holiday Dishes

Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole is a traditional holiday dish in our family. Traditional recipes are the best! They are what make holiday memories so special and the reason that you can’t wait for that Thanksgiving meal:)

Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole

This dish is full of sweet potatoes, butter, cinnamon, maple syrup, & vanilla bean paste… and topped with brown sugar, pecans & walnuts. I have been making all of my favorite recipes that my grams & mom made over the years. But, changing a few things to make them my own. I added the maple syrup & vanilla bean paste to this one. And my mom usually only uses pecans but, I used both pecans & walnuts here. I am trying to cut back on how much sugar that is used in this recipe which is why I used part maple syrup and we think that made it taste even better! (don’t tell mom) Vanilla bean paste is just yummy so, no further explanation is needed for that:)

How to make Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Casserole

  • First of all, it is easy!
  • Cooking the sweet potatoes may be the most time-consuming part of this recipe. But, once they are done and cooled a little it only takes a few minutes to put together. I usually boil the potatoes whole the day before I need them and its so easy to peel and mash them when it is time to make the recipe.
  • Stir in the ingredients for the potatoes and pour into a baking dish.
  • The topping comes next and if you buy chopped pecan/walnut pieces instead of whole halves that will save so much time. Melt the butter and stir everything together. Layer over the potatoes in the baking dish and press down a bit. Bake and enjoy!!

Happy Friday and enjoy the weekend!
