A Collection of Tried and True Recipes

Dirty Iced Chai Latte

· In: Coffee, Drinks

If you love the combination of coffee and spicy tea, this dirty iced chai latte will become your new go-to iced coffee drink. It combines a shot of espresso(or two) with spiced tea syrup and creamy milk for the perfect bold and cozy balance. Starbucks coffee shop Chai Latte has been a long time favorite treat. Making it at home is surprisingly simple after I perfected(in my opinion) the chai syrup recipe. I really enjoy being able to craft a cafe’-quality dirty iced chai latte in minutes.

Dirty Iced Chai Latte

What is an Dirty Iced Chai Latte?

A dirty iced chai latte is essentially a classic iced chai tea latte with the addition of espresso. Traditional chai is made from strong black tea infused with a blend of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and fresh ginger made into a syrup. When you add espresso shots, you create an espresso drink with a extra kick. The “dirty” refers to the coffee addition. If you add two shots of espresso, it is often called a double dirty chai or even a red eye chai. Either way, you get bold chai flavors layered with rich coffee.

Why is this a Popular Coffee Shop Drink

This iced coffee drink is popular because it delivers the best of both worlds:

  • The warmth of chai spices
  • The bold intensity of espresso
  • Creamy milk for balance
  • The sweetness, caffeine, and coffee is customizable to your taste
  • It is a great way to switch up a morning coffee during the warmer months when hot drinks may feel too heavy

Main Ingredients for the Perfect Dirty Iced Chai Latte

Here are the simple ingredients that you will need:

  • Chai Tea syrup
  • 1 or 2 shots of espresso
  • Milk of choice
  • Cold Foam topping or whipped cream
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon

Chai Tea Options

  • This recipe uses a homemade Chai Tea syrup which is the star of this latte for sure.
  • Chai tea bags or
  • A Chai Tea concentrate that is store bought or homemade can also be an option.

The Best Milk Options for Creaminess

The milk you choose changes the flavor profile greatly. Using your favorite milk allows for a customizable latte.

  • Dairy whole milk has a classic, rich, and creamy texture.
  • Almond milk – Light with a subtle nuttiness.
  • Soy milk – Smooth and protein-rich.
  • Coconut milk – Slight tropical sweetness.
  • Creamy Oat Milk – Thick, barista-style finish.

Tips for How to Brew the Espresso

For authentic flavor, brew the espresso using an espresso machine. An alternative is a french press. Another way to enjoy this drink is by making it with cold brew. Cold brew is usually a smooth less bitter coffee and is delicious with the chai syrup addition.

How to Customize your Dirty Chai

  • Add extra chai syrup
  • Add an additional shot of espresso
  • Make a double dirty chai
  • Use decaf espresso or coffee
  • Try using brown sugar instead of granulated when making the syrup
  • Use frozen coffee ice cubes to prevent dilution in the cold brew

Thank you! I keep the Chai tea in the fridge for a couple of days but I usually make the latte right before drinking it!
